Yeah, I think going with the notion that we're seeing Harley's romanticized and broken notion of what the relationship is is probably the correct interpretation. The intercut of them dancing certainly has that feeling.

I see your point on Joker jumping after Harley, but it's surrounded by so much other twisted stuff that the romantic take on it is the last thing on my mind there. The Bitter Script Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16575166527272639709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4706282221761427996.post-20558923115649137432016-08-08T13:03:11.473-07:002016-08-08T13:03:11.473-07:00It was still abusive and my own personal headcanon...It was still abusive and my own personal headcanon is that because Harley was a main character we saw the relationship from her perspective (idealized not realistic) but the parts that read as romantic to me were Joker jumping after Harley, Joker holding harley after the chemical bath and the intercut of them dancing in a comics nod. I may also be a bit biased by this list: http://www.slashfilm.com/suicide-squad-deleted-scenes/ of the purported deleted scenes that gives insight into how the relationship was conceived.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00352782029650762621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4706282221761427996.post-92183622484524069972016-08-08T00:14:54.784-07:002016-08-08T00:14:54.784-07:00Genuine question here, not me being snarky: Did it...Genuine question here, not me being snarky: Did it really read as romantic to you? The abuse came through loud and clear for me, but from the time I understood what Stockholm Syndrome was, I've applied it to Harley.

I've seen a couple takes on the movie where people seem upset at how abusive the relationship is played, and at that point, I have to wonder how they missed the subtext in that which goes all the way back to Harley's earliest appearances.

I mean, their biggest scenes together involve:
1) him strapping her to a gurney and torturing her with electric shocks.
2) Joker making her swear to some sort of cult-like devotion before permanently disfiguring herself in his name.
3) Him pimping her out to Common.

Again, genuinely asking, what is it that you're seeing in the film that negates that? I hate feeling like I missed something obvious. The Bitter Script Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16575166527272639709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4706282221761427996.post-68653327708661500982016-08-08T00:07:46.363-07:002016-08-08T00:07:46.363-07:00Man you didn't even get into how they decided ...Man you didn't even get into how they decided (both through writing and cutting scenes) to make Harley/Joker a romantic relationship and not abusive.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00352782029650762621noreply@blogger.com
