Some thoughts:

1 -- I liked that they shortened everything from (in the version I read) 111 pages to 91 minutes. It felt like the right pace in the theater. Though the movie cut out a lot of subtle set-ups and pay-offs that would have made re-watchings more enjoyable. I might see this movie one more time after it comes out, but only because it will be one dollar a night from Red Box.

2 -- Maybe it's because I have a weak spot for a little more raunch, but I thought the script was funnier than the movie. (though don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie). The script is definitely R rated and I understand why they tweened it up, but I would love to see a raunchy movie centered around a woman, and I have female friends who have said the same thing. Maybe mainstream audiences wouldn't be as down with that idea, but you're right about female driven movies being rare, and I wonder if that's because studios aren't willing to take such risks... Will there ever be a female equivalent to Superbad?

3 -- As for the Christian bashing... I am definitely not oversensitive, and in fact was the only person laughing about the jabs at religion. But I thought there was no reason for Marianne to be a Christian. There were plenty of people in high school who were prudes without being religious, and I think the jokes would have been just as funny if Marianne didn't prescribe to any religion.

SPOILER

4 -- The chlamydia thing bothered me cause it's curable which means she would have had to sleep with someone between her husband and the student. But she gains Olive's sympathy by saying that she and her husband hadn't been intimate in months, it was a weak point and that he was the only one, etc (all of which I assume the writer meant to be truths because at the time she's planning on admitting it before Olive offers to take the blame). The discrepancy was in the original script and I don't see how someone didn't notice and maybe most people won't, but I did. Totally could have been avoided by having the kid's mom find panties or a dirty note or anything... the idea is that she freaks out because they're super Christian so any of those things could set off his mom.

Overall, a really good movie.James Tilleryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09300484171371487011noreply@blogger.com
